Carol Alban

 

     Carol Alban is the principal flutist with the Bay Area Chamber Symphony and performs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and occasionally in New York.  Her primary flute teacher was Paul Renzi, the former principal flutist with the San Francisco Symphony. Other flute teachers have included Julie McKenzie, Janet See and April King, former protege of Julius Baker. She studied Latin American music and song-writing with internationally recognized composer and performer, Rafael Manriquez.

     Carol Alban plays classical, folk, Latin, modern and improvised music and has performed at all kinds of venues, ranging from the prestigious Berkeley Piano Club, to the historic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, to the infamous CBGB nightclub in New York City.  She maintains an active East Bay teaching studio for adult and youth students and directs the Fluteville Flute Choir in Piedmont.  She is a member of the National Flute Association and the New York Flute Club.

     Carol Alban composes concert and film music. "Elegy", a solo flute piece she composed and dedicated to victims of hurricane Katrina, was premiered by Carol at the 2005 Hurricane Relief Concert at San Francisco's Temple Emanu-el that included performances by Michael Tilson Thomas and Frederica Von Stade.  An expanded version of "Elegy", which the New York Times called "sweetly angular", was performed at the 2006 Tribeca New Music Festival by violinist Mary Rowell (Ethel String Quartet).  Carol is currently composing a piece for flute choir.
 
     Carol Alban is joined at Flute Fest by Nancy Tyler (flute) and Suellen Primost (cello), members of the Bay Area Chamber Symphony.
